Scrub Typhus Found in N.C. Chiggers – What You Need to Know

Did you know Researchers from N.C. State University and UNC-Greensboro found Chiggers in North Carolina carrying a deadly type of typhus? This is the first time Scrub Typhus has ever been reported in the United States. While there are no current reported cases of this disease, it’s important to stay informed and take preventive measures.

 

Here are some tips from the CDC to keep yourself and your loved ones safe!

 

Know the signs and symptoms of scrub typhus:


o Fever and chills
o Headache
o Body aches and muscle pain
o A dark, scab-like region at the site of the chigger bite
o Mental changes, ranging from confusion to coma.
o Enlarged lymph nodes
o Rash

 

If you will be spending time outdoors:

o Use EPA-registered insect repellant containing DEET or other active ingredients registered for use against chiggers
o Avoid areas with lots of vegetation and brush where chiggers may be found
